Ketchikan, AK
Much of the city is built on these structures in the water. It poured the day we were here which shouldn't be surprising as it rains over 260 days a year (if I'm remembering correctly). |

Alaska beauty from the cruise ship
Ryndam (our ship docked in Ketchikan)
The Ryndam anchored near Sitka. This was the only port we boarded the tender to go ashore.
Look at the tender near the cruise ship to give you an idea of the ship's massive size. The tenders are located on the ship and are also used as emergency lifeboats.

Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, AK
This glacier is retreating at approximately 30 feet per year. Notice the waterfall to the right of the picture. |

Whale watching in Juneau; The whales are surfacing and you are able to see (and hear) the water vapor being released from their spout Unbelievable!!
Whales surface as they are feeding in a process known as bubble-net feeding. The fish are trapped in a ring of bubbles allowing the whales to rise to the surface for a mouthful of fish. What an incredible experience to see!
Relaxing on the Lower Promenade Deck for some reading and napping. Yes, the wool blankets felt great.
Hubbard Glacier from more than a mile away; This glacier is the largest in North America and is six miles wide, 76 miles long and more than 400 feet high from the surface of the water
Hubbard Glacier | |
Calving of an iceberg; It sounds like rumbling thunder as the ice gives way to an iceberg.
A quarter mile from Hubbard Glacier; view from the 12th deck |
